Cédric Villani, mathematician, director of the Henri-Poincaré Institute from 2009 to 2017 is a La République en Marche member of Parliament since 2017. On March 28, 2018, he presented to President Emmanuel Macron a crucial report about how France can participate in the future of artificial intelligence, as our country is trailing behind the big powers of AI like the United States, China, and even Israel. With this report, Villani has drawn a “road map” to prioritize research and innovation in the field of AI in France. After collecting information from 420 AI experts, Villani identified several strategic, and realistic, sectors for the development of AI in France — among which health, transportation, environment, and defense. Villani also identified other areas in which the field is lacking, such as the massive deficit of women in the field, and the lack of public and private data. Facing many challenges for the progress of AI in France, Villani will come give us his insights.
