Jean Viard

Sociologist & Director of Research
Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (National Center for Scientific Research - CNRS)
Val d'Isère 2022

Some have called him “the ultimate authority in terms of French territory.” Sociologist and director of research at the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), Jean Viard is a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to his fields of research: from the 35-hour work week to regional planning, agriculture, and political behavior. His latest book, La révolution que l’on attendait est arrivée (“The Revolution We’ve Been Waiting For Has Arrived”), was published in May 2021.

What are his thoughts on our times? He believes that crises like the COVID-19 pandemic have the power to accelerate trends and trigger moments of profound change. In Val d’Isère, he will tell us more about how we need to rethink the art of governing, whether it be our territories, our society, or ourselves, in the wake of such a crisis.
